Stretching Is Not Optional — A Guide for Guys Who Skip It

Most guys treat stretching like it's something yoga people do between smoothies. You hit the gym, throw weight around, maybe grunt a little, and walk out feeling like a hero. Then you wonder why your back is screaming at you by Thursday and your shoulders feel like rusty door hinges.

I get it. I used to be that guy. At 6'4" and 252 lbs, I'm not exactly built for pretzel poses. But here's the thing — stretching is not optional if you want to keep lifting, keep moving, and not fall apart before you're 40.

Why Most Guys Skip Their Stretching Routine

It's boring. There, I said it. Nobody posts their hip flexor stretch on Instagram. Nobody brags about their hamstring flexibility at the gym. But you know what's even less cool? Not being able to tie your shoes without groaning like your grandpa.

A solid mobility routine for men doesn't need to be a 45-minute yoga session. Ten minutes. That's it. Ten minutes of targeted work and your body will thank you in ways you didn't know it could.

The Bare Minimum Flexibility Workout

Here's what I do — and I'm telling you, this changed everything:

  1. Hip flexor stretch — 90 seconds each side. Your hips are destroyed from sitting (whether that's at a desk, in a work truck, or in a gaming chair — guilty on all counts).
  2. Thoracic spine rotation — 10 reps each side. If your upper back is locked up, your shoulders and neck pay the price.
  3. World's greatest stretch — Yeah, that's actually what it's called. Look it up. 5 each side. It hits everything.
  4. Dead hangs — Just grab a pull-up bar and hang for 30-60 seconds. Your spine will decompress and your grip strength gets a bonus.
  5. Pigeon pose — I don't care if it looks silly. Your glutes and external rotators need this, especially if you squat or deadlift.

When to Do It

Every single day. Not just on gym days. Your mobility for men routine should be as non-negotiable as brushing your teeth. I do mine first thing in the morning and again after training. On rest days, I still hit at least the hip flexors and thoracic work.

The Real Talk

Here's the tough love part: if you're skipping your flexibility workout because you think it's not "real training," you're leaving gains on the table. Better mobility means deeper squats, safer presses, and fewer injuries. It means you actually get to keep doing the stuff you love instead of being sidelined because your body decided to quit on you.

Mobility isn't glamorous. Neither is changing your oil or drinking water. You still gotta do it.

Start with ten minutes today. Not tomorrow. Today.
